Outdoor Family Photography at Likey Hills Worcestershire

We met in early September at Likey Hills in Worcestershire, just as the countryside was beginning to turn that soft, dreamy shade of lilac. The heather was out in full bloom, spilling across the slopes and ridges in waves of colour. It’s one of those short, fleeting seasonal moments that makes outdoor family photography feel especially meaningful.

Likey Hills is one of those places that feels both open and intimate at the same time. Rolling views, quiet corners, and that feeling of being tucked away in nature without ever being far from the world. On evenings like this, it becomes something really special.

Capturing Life as Three at Likey Hills

This session was all about remembering life as three.

In just a few months, their world would shift and grow as they welcomed a new baby. So we planned this time at Likey Hills to hold onto what life looked like right now. The love between mum and dad, and the beautiful, busy, joy-filled rhythm they already had with their little boy.

Outdoor family photography isn’t just about where you are, it’s about what that place gives you. And Likey Hills gave us space, softness, and time.

Wandering Through Heather and Light

We wandered slowly through the heather-covered slopes of Likey Hills, letting the landscape guide us. The terrain naturally invites movement, little paths weaving through purple tones and long grass, with pockets of light breaking through as the sun began to dip.

A fallen tree became an instant favourite. Perfect for balancing, jumping, testing bravery, then running back for reassurance before heading off again. Their toddler was completely in his element, full of curiosity and energy, exactly as children should be in outdoor family photography sessions like this.

He touched everything. The heather. The grass. The bark of the fallen tree. Asking questions with his hands and his feet as much as his voice.

And then, of course, the ladybirds.

If you were out in Worcestershire that summer, you’ll remember them. Everywhere. Tiny moments of movement that stopped us in our tracks more than once.

The Beauty of Slowing Down at Likey Hills

Likey Hills has a way of encouraging you to slow down without even trying.

We paused often. Not for posing, but for noticing. The feel of the wind across the hilltops. The way the heather moved when they ran through it. The quiet little breaks between bursts of energy.

These are the moments that often end up meaning the most in outdoor family photography. Not the big gestures, but the in-between pauses that you only notice when you’re not rushing.

Quiet Moments for Mum and Dad

Amongst all the running and exploring, mum and dad found a few rare moments just for them.

Standing together in the heather at Likey Hills, slightly apart from the chaos of toddler energy, just taking it all in. Thinking about the baby they hadn’t met yet. Wondering who they would be. What they would add to this already full little world.

When you already have a toddler, those pauses are few and far between. Which is exactly why they matter so much.

Outdoor family photography creates space for those moments without forcing them. Just gentle opportunities to be together, in a place that already feels calm.

Play, Connection, and a Little Bit of Magic

My favourite moment came from something so simple.

Mum pretended she was stuck and couldn’t get up without a magic kiss from her main man.

At Likey Hills, with the heather all around them and the light softening, it turned into a game instantly. Not staged. Not directed. Just playful connection that made perfect sense in their world.

That’s what I always look for in outdoor family photography sessions. Not perfection, but play that already exists between you.

Why Likey Hills Works So Beautifully for Family Sessions

Likey Hills in Worcestershire is one of those locations that offers everything without feeling overwhelming. Open views, textured landscapes, seasonal colour, and space for children to move freely.

In late summer, when the heather is at its peak, it becomes especially magical. That short window of purple across the hills gives a natural softness to every frame, making it ideal for relaxed outdoor family photography.

It’s not about standing still here. It’s about moving through it, exploring it, and letting it become part of your story.

Holding Onto a Fleeting Season

The heather at Likey Hills doesn’t stay for long. It usually peaks in late July through August and sometimes stretches into early September if the season is kind.

That’s what makes sessions here feel so special. They are tied to time as much as place.

And that’s really what outdoor family photography is about. Holding onto the season you’re in, before it gently shifts into the next.

Because moments like these don’t hang around.
