Outdoor Family Photography at Painswick Beacon
It was one of those spring evenings where you can feel the earth beginning to wake up again. The air softer, the light stretching just that little bit longer. The kind of evening that feels full of possibility, and the perfect setting for outdoor family photography.
I met this gorgeous family at Painswick Beacon, one of my favourite spots for a Wild Light session. It’s wild and open there, with views that seem to go on forever, and light that dances across the hills in the most magical way. It really is the perfect place for an adventure amongst the wild light, and a dream location for outdoor family photography.
A Natural Approach to Outdoor Family Photography
Before the session, we’d already chatted about styling. Keeping things natural, nothing too forced, just something that felt like them while still tying everyone together. And yes, mum wore a pretty dress just because, which I will always, always encourage.
When it comes to outdoor family photography, I always guide gently rather than direct. The aim is never perfection. It’s connection, comfort, and space to simply be together.
We didn’t jump straight into photos. We played first.
Letting Little Ones Lead the Way
Their little one was very cuddly to begin with. A little shy, a little unsure. Not quite convinced about me or the big camera in my hand. So we slowed everything down, just as I always do during outdoor family photography sessions.
We hunted for daisies to give to mum. We tickled each other with them. We wandered through pockets of shadow and light, letting the evening wrap itself around us.
I’d brought some ribbons along, just to spark a bit of play, and they were an instant hit. So much spinning. So much joy. Those ribbons ended up travelling all the way over the hill with us, clutched tightly in small hands that didn’t want to let them go.
And that’s the thing about these sessions. I follow their lead.
When their little one decided we were climbing the beacon, we climbed. No overthinking. No strict plan. Just letting the moment unfold as it wanted to. This is where outdoor family photography really comes to life.
Golden Light and Quiet Connection
As the light began to dip low over the Gloucestershire countryside, everything softened. The sky warmed. The wind slowed. These are the moments outdoor family photography is made for.
We wrapped up in blankets and gathered close, that quiet shift that always comes at the end of a session. The energy softens, and everything feels a little more connected.
We took a few moments just for mum and dad too. Those rare, often-forgotten photos. The ones where it’s just them, together, in the middle of it all.
The Beauty of Unposed Moments
And then, completely unplanned, their little boy ran straight in.
A photobomb, of course. The best kind.
That cheeky smile, that need to be part of it, that little burst of personality right in the middle of something calm. It’s one of my favourite images from the whole session. Because it wasn’t posed. It wasn’t prompted. It just happened, exactly as it should in outdoor family photography.
And if you’re a mum, you know that feeling. When they come running back to you like that. When they look at you like you are their whole world.
Why Outdoor Family Photography Matters
These are the moments I love to document. The playful, unposed, beautifully wild parts of childhood. The in-between bits. The ones that don’t ask for perfection, just presence.
This is what my Wild Light sessions are all about. Letting children be exactly who they are, outdoors, in nature, with space to explore. A little bit like my wildlife-inspired sessions, where nothing is forced and everything is observed as it unfolds.
Outdoor family photography gives families the freedom to move, to play, and to connect without pressure. Honest, connected, and full of life.
